Kindness starts within, which is why looking after yourself is the most beneficial act of kindness.

We usually think of kindness as something that we give to other people, but how often do we show that same kindness to ourselves? On the 13th of November, we are encouraged to celebrate ‘World Kindness Day’ and take this time to remember that kindness can take many forms: checking in on an old friend, offering encouragement, taking time to rest, moving our bodies or simply permitting ourselves to slow down. We believe wellbeing begins with how we treat ourselves, both physically and mentally. We must try to learn to listen to our bodies, nurture our minds and create more positive connections with those around us: forever being kind to ourselves and others.

Being kind to your body through yoga encourages us to listen to our bodies rather than push beyond our limits. It teaches us patience, acceptance and self-compassion, as every stretch, breath and movement is an opportunity to give ourselves a little kindness. Kindness is understanding that every body is different and celebrating what yours can do.

Be kind to your mind as mindfulness encourages us to pause and become more aware of our thoughts and feelings and allows us to be less critical of ourselves. Taking even five minutes to breathe, reflect and reset can make a difference to how we approach the day. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply slow down.

Be kind to someone else by encouraging them to join you in a class - a simple way to spread kindness and positivity. Moving your body is an amazing way of showing appreciation for what it allows you to do; it’s not just about physical results; it’s about feeling stronger, healthier and happier. Exercise should be an act of self-care, not punishment.

Remember that kindness doesn’t have to be grand gestures or big changes. It can be as simple as taking time for yourself, moving your body, finding a moment of calm or making someone smile or laugh.

When we make time to look after ourselves, we create more space to look after others.
