Arm balance start point
The Bakasana family of arm balances are the jumping off point for most people into balancing on your hands. The pose is outwardly an example of strength, skill, and control, inwardly it shows control of your core & your mind. Practicing Flying Crow, Baby Crow, or Crane pose builds self-confidence by reminding us that we’re stronger and more capable than we think. The great thing about this family of poses is that it’s challenging but accessible to everyone, even if you can’t yet do the pose, you feel like you are on your way somewhere!
Crow/Crane uses the arms the Yogi press up in a Sun Salutation and Plank in your upper body, and legs from the Yogi Squat in your lower body. It also asks us to use our core and inner thighs to stay in the pose, so in this way it uses what we have already learnt in yoga practice.
This pose also brings us head to head with the fear of falling on our faces, as the pose asks us to find our centre of gravity, the point where it feels like ‘oh no, I might fall’, this is the balance point in the pose. Of course you may fall, but you soon realise you really don’t hurt yourself that much & its a great lesson as in life if you don’t try & fail a few times, you won’t get where you want to be!
